Who Would You Like to Be When You Grow Up?
2021

Video, 00:01:55

The work shows scenes of a young woman and a middle-aged woman performing the role of a sales assistant. The video is intercut with questions aimed at the viewer — questions about the future, such as those you’d usually ask a child, like "Who do you want to be when you grow up?" — alongside reflections on the past: "Did you ever have the chance to reach your potential?" The two figures can be seen as younger and older versions of the same person: the younger self, anxious about the future, and the older self, looking back at her life and the lack of resources she had to pursue her dreams. The piece highlights the employee’s individuality, her dreams, hopes, and ambitions. The retail worker must perform the role of someone at peace with the world, despite career dissatisfaction, poor working conditions, and the absence of a living wage.
