My First Day, 2022
Film, 00:05:09
The film depicts a figure moving through the bleachers of an unspecified location as she embodies the role of a spectator. The bleachers serve as a metaphor for the place we go when we revisit our memories. The figure reflects on her first day at an unnamed event, fantasizing about a moment that never truly happened.
The project explores the theme of regret, particularly regarding career choices and unfulfilled dreams. Throughout our childhood, we're constantly asked what we want to be when we "grow up." As adults, we often talk about fulfilling those childhood dreams. However, discovering who we truly are takes time, and we don't always figure out our path when we're young. We tend to dwell in the past, longing for the things we wish we had done, known, or experienced.
The idea for the project emerged from the artist’s first time being told she was "too old" to start a career at the age of seven, after seeing an advertisement for synchronized swimming at a local pool.
